Experience description:

I am a meditation practitioner of 5 years. I started meditating 1hr a day in Dec 2018. Two months later in Feb 2019, I went to help my friend move house. I had been meditating approx. 60 days by this point. And I had started to take large doses of ground herbs and spices as a tea every morning. 1tsp or so of mixed spices, such as: Turmeric, Fenugreek, Cumin etc. With these 2 elements of meditation and herbs and the final element of being physically tired, I had my first 'out of body' experience, or the first of this particular kind.

I had helped my friend move house. And carried in furniture for him. I had part-assembled his guest bed. And was in a 16th floor apartment. I don't think I had ever been so high in a building. I was in the clouds. Evening came and I felt physically tired from lifting all day, so ended up going to sleep. I was conscious the whole time, and even saw him come in, but from the outside, I was asleep. There was a particular point before 'waking' that is the key part of my experience.

I was neither asleep, nor awake as myself yet, I was in between. And I remember clearly being able to see a man walk up to the front door of the apartment from the hall. My eyes were closed and I was in a dark room. And 3 rooms away from the hall. But I could see him, clearly with his dark jacket and tanned skin approach the door. And in my head, I heard the sound 'knock knock'. Then, a few seconds later, with my ears, heard the sound of a knock at the door. After this, I laid there still, and heard within my head the word 'Hello?' and then with my ears, the phone rang and my friend answered 'Hello?'. I could see and hear things before they happened. The information was already set in motion, it just reached my mind's awareness before it reached my senses.

What "woke me up" was the enthusiasm I had to see if I could see the man/person at the end of the phone. I could not. And trying induced me back into my body.

And honestly, I am more interesting in experiences in this state of consciousness than I am in being my regular old self.

Any associated medications or substances with the potential to affect the experience?      Yes    I was taking copious amounts or herbs and spices in warm water every morning. Turmeric, Cumin, Fenugreek etc. And I'd take about 1tsp of my own herbal concoctions each day.

Was the kind of experience difficult to express in words?          No

At the time of this experience, was there an associated life threatening event? No

What was your level of consciousness and alertness during the experience?    Alert, Conscious, Clear, Lucid. Between wake and sleep.

Was the experience dream like in any way?  No. It was very real. And the first time I could see without my eyes. And hear before my ears.

Did you experience a separation of your consciousness from your body?   Yes    I knew I had a body. I could feel it. I was anchored in it. In its location. But it was so relaxed and tired, that my mind was able to be free of it. And I could experience phenomena beyond my physical senses.

What emotions did you feel during the experience?          No emotion. Just awareness. Clarity. The moment I had emotion was the pre-requisite moment to me coming back into my body. The emotion destroyed the experience. And cut me from it.

Did you hear any unusual sounds or noises?         Yes, I heard 'Greetings' and knocks before they happened. Before the sound had been created.

LOCATION DESCRIPTION:  Did you recognize any familiar locations or any locations from familiar religious teachings or encounter any locations inhabited by incredible or amazing creatures?         Yes    Familiar to me, as I had been in this apartment for 2 days or so.

Did you see a light?        No

Did you experiment while out of the body or in another, altered state?         Yes    I only extended my awareness beyond my physical body's environment. But the experience made me curious about other physical locations, further away from my physical body.

Did you observe or hear anything regarding people or events during your experience that could be verified later?          Yes    I saw a man knock at the door in my mind. I heard him knock at the door in my mind. A few seconds later, I heard a knock at the door with my ears. I heard a person say 'hello?' with my mind. A few seconds later, I heard the phone ring in the other room and my friend say 'hello?', with my ears. My mind was aware of phenomena before it reached my senses. The auditory phenomena I could verify with my ears. The visual phenomena I could not verify with my eyes, as I was not in the same room as the things I was seeing.

Did you notice how your 5 senses were working, and if so, how were they different? Yes    I noticed my 5 physical senses were normal. my 6th sense of mind was exceptionally more receptive and acutely sensitive.

Did you have any sense of altered space or time?  Yes    It made me question time and space, of course. How could I be aware of sound before it was generated? I understand how I could see someone walk to the door as they are walking to it. But I didn't understand how I could hear something before it happened. That was curious to me. At one point does something happen?

Did you have a sense of knowing, special knowledge, universal order and/or purpose?         Yes    I became aware that phenomena exists in more than one moment. Something can simultaneously have happened already and not happened yet.

Did you reach a boundary or limiting physical structure?           No

Did you become aware of future events?      Yes    I heard sounds before they happened. I saw things while they were happening, but they were happening beyond my body's physical location. I could not see through the walls with my eyes, but I could see through the walls with my mind.

Were you involved in or aware of a decision regarding your return to the body?          Yes    It was not a conscious decision. It was not a decision. It was a thrust of enthusiasm. Actually, identification with my new found discovery and the lust to know more and see more. Like a child fascinated with the water, so much so that it falls in. Well, I wanted only to see more. And the want to see more with my mind, threw me into my body. It was desire, greed, need- earthly things.

Did you have any psychic, paranormal or other special gifts following the experience that you did not have prior to the experience?      Yes    Yes, my intuition extended.

Did you have any changes of attitudes or beliefs following the experience?     Yes    Yes, I realized actions exist on a few planes simultaneously, they have happened and they have not happened yet. They have happened at the level of mind. But they have not happened yet at the level of the empirical body.

How has the experience affected your relationships? Daily life? Religious practices? Career choices?   I suppose it has confused me! It makes things a little difficult if you are sensitive to things before they become manifest. I'm not going to lie, this level of sensitivity makes life hard. Things can easily feel overwhelming with the amount of information you can be aware of. So it has made me prefer peace and quiet and I am never surprised.

Has your life changed specifically as a result of your experience? Yes    I am more curious. I am more open to psychic abilities.

Have you shared this experience with others?       Yes    I can't remember who I told it too. But the usual probably, my mum, friend, brother. And now you all. I haven't experienced any reaction from anyone that has stuck in my head. We commonly talk about these things, so maybe it's just silence and wonder.

What emotions did you experience following your experience? Disappointment! To be back in my body. But pleasant wonder at experiencing the mind extend beyond my body. I have since wanted to recreate this experience, but haven't yet. I don't know how I did it. And will try taking all those herbs and spices again. And sitting on very tall hills or 16th floor apartments.

What was the best and worst part of your experience?          The best was the awareness of how much there was to be aware of. And the worst was cutting off from that. And being contained again in my empirical body, that couldn't see through walls and had to have its eyes open to see- the limits of the earthly form.

Is there anything else you would like to add concerning the experience? Yes, that is the result of years of developing lucid dreaming (since I was a child) and meditation and a desire to extend beyond this form (again, since I was a child). But an important feature of this experience was the importance of relaxation in the body for spiritual experience, an actual daily practice and the help of herbs... and height! :D

Following the experience, have you had any other events in your life, medications or substances which reproduced any part of the experience?       No      Yes, following the experience, before the experience.

Did the questions asked and information you provided accurately and comprehensively describe your experience?           Yes    Thank you.

Please offer any suggestions you may have to improve this questionnaire.       It is very thorough. Thank you.
