Experience description:

One cold winter night, after I had taught my day class plus a night class, I was so sleepy that I almost fell asleep at the wheel as I drove to my home which was about five miles from my school. When I arrived at my home I was so exhausted that I immediately went to bed. I did not bother to take my clothes off and I fell into a death-like sleep. After I had slept for about 30 minutes I suddenly opened my eyes and discovered that I was floating toward the ceiling. When I reached a height of about four feet from my bed I looked back and got the shock of my life, because on that bed was my physical body. At first I thought I was dead, but when I took another look I saw that my chest was in motion and I must still be alive, but what was I doing suspended in air above my physical body?   I looked around my bedroom and saw the clock on the wall as the second hand continued to rotate. I then looked down the hall and could hear my wife and little girl doing homework on the kitchen table. I returned to the bedroom and again hovered over my physical body. As I gazed at my body I suddenly, like a bolt of lightening, shot back into my body and go out of my bed like a frightened animal. Since my very vivid experience, I have interviewed people from throughout the United States who have encounter the same thing, but on a much larger scale.

At what time during the experience were you at your highest level of consciousness and alertness?    I was totally alert all during my experience.

How did your highest level of consciousness and alertness during the experience compare to your normal everyday consciousness and alertness?     Normal consciousness and alertness

Did your vision during the experience differ in any way from your normal, everyday vision (in any way, such as clarity, field of vision, colors, brightness, depth perception degree of solidness/transparency of objects, etc.)?            No

Did you experience consciousness / awareness apart from your physical / earthly body?            Yes     I was like two different persons. My soul or spirit could see my physical body from a distance.

Did you see or hear any earthly events that were occurring at a time that your consciousness / awareness was apart from your physical / earthly body?            Yes     I could see everything in my bed room and down the hall. I could hear my wife and little girl talking.

Did you see or hear any earthly events that were occurring during the time that your consciousness / awareness was apart from your physical / earthly body that you later (after your experience) verified really happened or was real?            Yes     I verified the fact that my wife and little girl had been doing home work on the kitchen table. They were still in the kitchen when I got out of bed.

Did you see or hear any earthly events that were occurring during the time that your consciousness / awareness was apart from your physical body that were located far beyond any possible physical sensory awareness of your physical / earthly body?            Yes     I could see pictures hanging on the wall in the hall near my bedroom. It would have been impossible to have seen them from my physical body while I was in bed.

What emotions did you feel during the experience?            When I first looked back and saw my physical body, I thought I was dead.

I remember the experience more accurately than other life events that occurred around the time of the experience                  My experience was so vivid that I shall never forget it.

Discuss any changes that might have occurred in your life after your experience:   My experience made me want to investigate the experiences of other people.

Did you have any changes in your values or beliefs after the experience that occurred as a result of the experience?            Yes     I wanted to learn more about the afterlife.

Are there one or several parts of the experience that are especially meaningful or significant to you? My ability to see my own physical body from a distance

Have you ever shared this experience with others?            Yes     It was several days before I told anyone about my strange encounter, because I thought they would think I was only dreaming. Those who believed me started investigating and were eager to learn more. They became interested in their own souls.

What did you believe about the reality of your experience shortly (days to weeks) after it happened:            Experience was definitely real    I am a very observing person and I know the difference between reality and dreaming.
