Trish's Experience

Experience description:

I was taking care of my dad as a hospice patient in my home. He fell into a coma three days before so we knew the end was near. He actually held on longer than the visiting hospice nurses thought he would. My dad was very close to his Navy buddies from WWII. He was very proud of his service and his Destroyer Escort that he served on during the war. At the time of his death I believe there was only of his buddies still living. He missed them all very much. He always spoke of his ship and buddies a lot throughout his life.

My sister and I were sitting at the kitchen table at around 7am. I had the door open to the outside as it was summer and wanted some fresh air in the room. We were not speaking but just sitting with our own thoughts, as we knew our dad was in a coma in the other room dying. Neither of us was thinking of the Navy or ships or anything of that sort. It was very quiet outside with nothing happening. All of a sudden we both heard very loud, as though it was just outside on the street, a Naval whistle that military Naval ships blow they call "piping onboard." It's the long 3 notes they sound during different times, as when dignitaries or such are coming on board the ship.

My sister and I both looked up at each other and found out we both heard it as it was pretty loud. I ran to the door and looked outside and no one was there. I checked to make sure no TV's or radios were on and none were. It was just as quiet as before the whistle sounded.

My dad that evening quietly passed away. We both believe that maybe my dad's buddies came to get him. I guess that sounds crazy but I have never heard any whistles or any such noises such as that before or after that day and I have lived here for 11 years. Plus, those men and that ship meant a lot to him.
