Experience description:

At a very young age, I was being sexually abused by a relative and these instances occurred on two of those occasions.  The first memory of an out-of-body experience was one where I looked at a spot above the TV in the corner, I saw a flash or light, then in an instant I left my body on the sofa and physically felt myself zip up to that same spot above the TV in the corner. I was watching myself. It lasted for awhile, but no more than 2 minutes. I remember it being quiet & safe, but cannot remember what I saw after the first notice of looking back at myself. When it ended, I couldn't feel the same sensation of actually going back to my body, it seemed to just happen in a moment.

The second instance the out-of-body experienced happened in an instant, but I saw no light this time. I ended up across the room on the floor holding my knees up against my chest while looking at myself on a bench. It was quiet & I cannot remember what I saw beyond the first notice of looking back at myself. This particular instance did not feel entirely safe, and I cannot remember going back to my body or much beyond that point.

Any associated medications or substances with the potential to affect the experience?   No

Was the kind of experience difficult to express in words?   No

What was your level of consciousness and alertness during the experience?   Alert at the beginning, then seemed to fade with the quietness & not being able to remember exactly what I saw.

Was the experience dream like in any way?   Not really, although I am aware that I was not physically across the room.

Did you experience a separation of your consciousness from your body?   Yes   It was me, although I couldn't see myself.  The second instance, I was actually sitting with my knees pulled up to my chest.

What emotions did you feel during the experience?    Safety, confusion.

Did you hear any unusual sounds or noises?    No.

Did you recognize any familiar locations or any locations from familiar religious teachings or encounter any locations inhabited by incredible or amazing creatures?    No

Did you see a light?    Yes    So brief, yet the hardest to describe of everything that happened. It appeared out of nowhere, seemed to be warm and unsure of a shape other than it had 2 glinting rays, one specifically coming off the bottom.

Did you meet or see any other beings?    No

Did you experiment while out of the body or in another, altered state?   No

Did you observe or hear anything regarding people or events during your experience that could be verified later?   No

Were you involved in or aware of a decision regarding your return to the body?    No

Did you have any psychic, paranormal or other special gifts following the experience that you did not have prior to the experience?    No

Did you have any changes of attitudes or beliefs following the experience?   Uncertain    Great intuition. Reflect on whether or not my brain was protecting me or something else was.

How has the experience affected your relationships? Daily life? Religious practices? Career choices?    Not much.

Has your life changed specifically as a result of your experience?   No

Have you shared this experience with others?    Yes    I usually explain it in a way that I understand it's within our brain chemistry to protect us from traumatic events.  The few people I have told have been surprised, possibly disbelieving.

What was the best and worst part of your experience?   The NOT remembering.

Is there anything else you would like to add concerning the experience?    This could be considered mild disassociation by psychologists and I actually experienced a few more OBEs growing up, although none as specific as these two.  However, once into my 20's I have never experienced one since - it's like I grew out of it.

Did the questions asked and information you provided accurately and comprehensively describe your experience?    Yes
