Experience description #1:

Over the years I have had encounters with apparitions and wrote of them. I list the writings as fiction since few believe in Ghosts or reincarnation. I leave it to the reader to ponder the question, reality or imagination?

The house was built in Pennsylvania by the local coal company in around 1880. Since then it had numerous occupants, but no written history.

It was in one of the many patch towns in the coal mining area.

Each town was like another country even down to the language most often spoken. This one was Slovak, but others were Polish, Italian, Irish and German. They were proud to be American citizens and most spoke some sort of broken English. The towns were small and near the entrance to a mine.

The English and Welch bosses lived in the large nearby city.  The Molly Maguires operated in this region and achieved national fame and a movie, but another incident that occurred is not well known outside the region.

My grandfather was carrying the American flag in this during the march to Lattimer Mines on September 10, 1897. He was wearing a new pair of shoes that day and they gave him a blister.  As they approached Lattimer, he handed the flag to the man next to him and stopped to soak his feet in a stream.

Soon after that, the marchers were confronted by the local sheriff and his deputies. All, so called lawmen, owed allegiance to the mine owner.

The unarmed miners were on a road and causing no harm to any property or person.  They were cautioned not to carry even a walking stick before the march started.

The deputies fired on the miners with 44/40 caliber lever action repeating rifles.  They used soft nose hunting ammunition which causes a terrible wound.

9 miners were killed and 36 were wounded. Most of the wounds were in the back and deputies moved around for better shots at the fleeing miners.  Many survivors lost limbs or were disfigured for life. The families of those miners who could no longer work were destitute. There was no welfare or workmans compensation in those days.

My grandfather, who would have been in the front rank, was saved by a pair of new shoes.

It was stated in the press as the greatest slaughter of workmen ever known in America.

My wifes parents acquired half of the duplex  in 1936 for $800  ($15,000 in our dollars) and made many additions and improvements. Now it was 2003 and the value is  $52,000.

I was alone as I prepared dinner. The BBQ sauce flew across the floor, the cap came off and it made a miserable mess. Normally the ghost kept in the attic, but today she was showing her presence in the kitchen. I told her that if she did this again, I would sleep in the attic every night. While there in the past, she would wake me during the night and make it clear that she wanted me to leave. I never saw her but I could feel her presence and assumed it was a woman.

Two days later, the mustard somersaulted to the floor, cap came off and another mess was made. I cleaned it up without a word and went up to confront the ghost in the attic.

It seemed different since the old sewing machine, trunk and hanging clothes were not there. Granny must have cleaned house again.

I was startled when I saw the body of a young woman lying on the floor.

I sat by her side and wondered what to do next since I had no idea who she was or how she ended up here.

I sensed rather than heard,

The men cut the rope and let me drop to the floor.

What men, I asked?

My husband was a miner and the company required us to keep boarders in this company owned house which we rented.

Jan died from wounds in the Lattimer Massacre, he was in front and carrying the American flag. After the funeral I was told I had to leave or marry a miner. I had no where to go, I had no money and I had a bill at the company store. One of the boarders offered to marry me and assume my bill.

I cooked and washed clothes for 7 men, it was hard work.

Jacob was not kind and loving like Jan. I tolerated him but one night he forced me to sleep with one of the boarders. The man paid him for the act. Jacob said that it was a way to help pay my bills. Since women were in short supply, there were many that were willing to pay for a night with me. He never did marry me, but kept putting it off.

I could not live with this and had nowhere to go. I got a rope, stood on a bucket, tied it over the beam and ended my misery.

They buried me in the woods beyond the town and said I went away while they were at work. I want to rest near Jan. You will move me there.

I blinked and she was gone. The sewing machine, trunk and clothes were there as I had expected to see. Am I really awake?

All this was mystifying, but I acquired a large garbage bag and a shovel.

Although I could not see her, I felt compelled to walk in a given direction. Just beyond the town, the command was to stop.  Was this the spot?

I began to dig carefully. Down about a foot, my shovel touched something hard, so I knelt and used my hands to uncover a skull.  After more careful digging, I uncovered a full skeleton.

I must report this to the police, but I sensed,  No, they will not put me with Jan, they will not believe you.

She could read my thoughts and inject hers.  I put all the bones in my bag and left them in the garage. What will be next?

That night she woke me and said, It is time.

I dressed, Put the bag in the car and drove to the old Polish cemetery as commanded. In the far corner there was an unmarked area where she stopped me.

Dig here, I had no money for a stone, Jan is here.

I carefully removed a large square of sod and dug down about a foot. I carefully arranged the bones in the hole then covered it and replaced the sod. I felt she was contended and asked her name.

My name is Marishka, your great grandfather was my relative. Only you could have done this for me and now I am free.

I drove back to the house and went back to bed. I told no one since I was not certain it was not a dream and what I had done, if I were awake, was probably against some law.

Several days later I went to the cemetery and saw that the sod was cut and replaced. I placed flowers on the graves of my ancient cousins Marishka and Jan who were together at last.

Experience description #2:

My father was a coal miner in Pennsylvania and had anthrasilicosis (black lung). That is coal dust in the lungs which affected his heart and artery functions later in life. He always wheezed when he breathed.

This night he was in a hospital 1600 miles away and having a heart attack. I was sleeping at the time but felt his plea for help. I traveled to his hospital room and saw him in agony. I felt that I was helping him breathe for a long time. After a while he seemed to breathe on his own. I saw my mother and sister in the room with him. I knew he recovered and was stable. Later I woke up in my bed 1600 miles away to answer the phone and my sister filled me in on what I already knew. I felt that I had traveled out on my body 1600 miles to help my father. I never got to ask him if he felt my presence since he passed away a few days later.

I always wonder if I could have helped him then, but I was awake and working when he died.
