Experience description:

I've had spontaneous OBEs and "flying" dreams since childhood.  The sensations associated with OBEs frightened me for a very long time because I didn't understand them and could not control the experience.  At some point in my life as an adult, at a time when I was exploring my own and many other belief systems, I decided that since the OBE was going to happen to me anyway, I took the time to read and explore the OBE experience.  After some time thereafter, and when I finally let go of my fear, they became a wonderful experience, an experience I looked forward to having.  I even have what I call "trigger" sensations while in the hypnogogic state, I recognized the sensations and am usually able to leave my body at will.  Interestingly though, several years ago around 2002/2003 I went through a phase of a span of about 2 to 3 years of having intense OBEs multiple times a week, and sometimes multiple times per night.  But over the years and currently they have become less frequent (or my awareness of them have decreased).  It's almost like I "been there, did that" kind of thing, almost as if I needed to have those experiences at that time in my life.  I accept and embrace the OBE experience for what it is, very real to me and a life/belief changing experience.  I do not seem to have the "need" to experience them so much anymore, although they do still happen to me occasionally.

The most significant thing I find about the OBE experience is the difference between an OBE and a dream.  I can remember details about an OBE from years previous - while details of a dream seem to fade over time.  I have kept journals during those years where they were so intense.  I find that journaling helps and have gotten away from doing that over the years and need to be diligent about writing my experiences in OBEs and lucid dreams down.

Any associated medications or substances with the potential to affect the experience?     No

Was the kind of experience difficult to express in words? Yes     In general, describing the experience to others is difficult without sounding crazy and while watching their eyes glaze over.  I keep most experiences to myself and in a journal.  I don't really feel the need to quantify or explain them anymore to anyone - unless I feel they are truly interested.

At the time of this experience, was there an associated life threatening event?          No

What was your level of consciousness and alertness during the experience?           Very high conscious level sometimes - it seemed I could hold on to the experience for a very long time.  When that happened, the experience was very bright and colorful - fantastic places would appear - the experience became very subjective.  Other times I couldn't get out of my room or go very far at all, or seemed to have very low energy where it was dark and foggy.  I believe it has to do with how much energy you are carrying over with you in your energy body.

Was the experience dream like in any way?   Some were dreamlike or turned into a dreamlike experience.  Others were very clear and seemed to happen in real time.

Did you experience a separation of your consciousness from your body?     Yes     I sometimes looked at my hands and see a faint outline of them, but then they would have the melting effect and disappear.  Also, I see a light around me that I can't quite focus on - sometimes it is green, sometimes it is white.  I mostly do not see a form of myself but feel it is a conscious existence not a physical one - although I do seem to sprout invisible limbs when I need them.  I feel like I'm walking sometimes or bouncing.  Flying is always my first thought.

What emotions did you feel during the experience?            Elation, a high!  Sometime it is an awe inspiring experience - like when I ask to "experience my higher self" or ask to "experience God" I would be caught up in a celestial type event - where I am in maybe what they call the "void" but I see stars and galaxies and it is wonderful.

Did you hear any unusual sounds or noises?           Before separation I used to - sometimes voices, sometimes the classical buzzing and sawing sounds, early on I would hear a rushing wind like a storm outside - that frightened me.  Frequently, before separation, I would hear people carrying on like a party in the next room - that does not happen as much anymore.  The sounds became less frequent the more experiences I had - it is very quiet as a matter of fact upon separation.

LOCATION DESCRIPTION:  Did you recognize any familiar locations or any locations from familiar religious teachings or encounter any locations inhabited by incredible or amazing creatures?            Yes     In some experiences it was like I was on another planet or another dimension.  I'd be walking around in a neighborhood or some fantastic looking place knowing very well that I was out of body and my physical body was at home in bed.  Sometimes the "entities" I would encounter looked human but with slight differences - hard to explain.  Most of the time, very human looking.  I do remember having some entities come up to me - mainly when I felt I was in a lower astral level - that were seeming to "play" with me or "mess" with me.  I would just tell them in my mind to go away and quit bothering me - which they would.  Nothing frightening to me.

Did you see a light?           Yes     I would see a light around me as I said earlier - I don't know if it is coming from me or what - I could never focus on it. It was like those specks in your eyes that move around when you try to focus on them.

Did you meet or see any other beings?           Yes     I do remember some entities that seemed to have some "profound" information or communication with me - I wrote some of them down but I never could quite remember the information completely - which was always frustrating to me.  When out of the body I would often ask to see my guides - it seems I have three around me.

Did you experiment while out of the body or in another, altered state? Uncertain

Often times, I would have a goal to do something or visit someone next time I was out of body - but once I was out of body - that desire seemed to go away - it was no longer important to me to follow through with it.  I always thought that was interesting - It makes me wonder if that is how we separate and "go on" so to speak when we die.  We break our ties with the things of this world and even some people so that we are able to go on.  I get a sense that our perspective changes drastically.

Did you notice how your 5 senses were working, and if so, how were they different?          Yes            When in a very high energetic state of being out of body everything is crystal clear, everything seems to be alive and have a glow about it.  Energy is at a peak and the energy body is very light.

Did you have any sense of altered space or time?   Yes     I was once out of body and thought I was on another planet or in another dimension - I kept this state of clarity in this particular place for what seemed a very long time while at the same time I knew I was asleep in my bed and that very soon my alarm would be going off for me to get up to go to work.

Did you have a sense of knowing, special knowledge, universal order and/or purpose?    Yes            Perhaps, but I could never retain it upon awakening. I must have on some conscious level though because I have changed quite a bit in my belief systems - I do not fear death at all.

Did you reach a boundary or limiting physical structure?             Yes     I'm not sure about this - there were some experiences that I had where I could not get through a wall or ceiling or that there was in fact some kind of barrier in front of me that made it very difficult to pass through.  I never had any fear of how far I could go.

Did you become aware of future events?       Uncertain      Not that I'm aware of.

Were you involved in or aware of a decision regarding your return to the body?       Yes     If I thought I needed to get back to my physical body for some reason I would just think about it and I would return immediately. The difficulty is trying not to think about your physical body and being able to stay out longer.

Did you have any psychic, paranormal or other special gifts following the experience that you did not have prior to the experience?         Yes     I think I am more intuitive, I feel more awareness of what people are feeling and thinking.  Not specifically, but just a general feeling - I'm usually right.

Did you have any changes of attitudes or beliefs following the experience?   Yes     Definitely. More spiritual and less religious.

How has the experience affected your relationships? Daily life? Religious practices? Career choices?       Not my career as much but socially and religiously I think a great deal.  I'm more relaxed about life and accepting of where other people are on their journey in life.

Has your life changed specifically as a result of your experience?         Yes     Again, I'm more spiritual and less afraid of what happens in this life.

Have you shared this experience with others?         Yes     I have shared my experiences with my partner and some close friends that are interested.  My partner has learned to have their own experiences.

What emotions did you experience following your experience?  I feel energized and very happy after I wake up from an experience.  I want to have more.  I want to explore more.

What was the best and worst part of your experience?      The worst part is over - the initial getting over the fear factor was the biggest challenge.  The best part is that I know without a doubt that these experiences are real and that we exist outside of our physical body.  That when we die and leave our physical bodies for good that separation will be as easy as turning over in bed.

Is there anything else you would like to add concerning the experience?        Not really.  I wish everyone could have these experiences - our world would be a different place.  I wish my experiences would return as often as they used to but I believe I have gotten what I needed from them. They had a purpose for me.

Following the experience, have you had any other events in your life, medications or substances which reproduced any part of the experience?         Yes     Not really any substances.  I do feel that if I am sick (running a fever) or if I am exhausted I tend to separate more easily.

Did the questions asked and information you provided accurately and comprehensively describe your experience?               Yes     Pretty much - I have had a lot of experiences and they were different from each other so many times.
