Linda L's Son's Experience

Experience description:

It was about 10:30-11:00pm on Saturday, January 7, 2006.  We had several friends and family members (approx 11) that were visiting and helping and giving us support.  It was very quiet and I went to the living room where my son Grant's bed was to check on him.  His girlfriend was sitting in a chair by his bed on his left side.  They were both sleeping quite peacefully, his girlfriend with her head resting next to his shoulder.  As I turned to leave the room both Grant and his girlfriend suddenly and abruptly woke up simultaneously and Grant turned his head to the left to look up towards the loft that overlooks our living room area.  He was apparently looking/listening to something in that area.  A few other people were in the room along with me and we all turned our heads to see what Grant was responding to.  We saw or heard nothing.

Grant was suffering/dying from a brain virus called JC virus, a virus that quickly destroys the white matter of the brain resulting in massive losses of motor control of all body functions.  Although his motor control was affected, his cognitive functions were still very alert.  He could not speak at this point but could still shake his head yes and no to talk to you.  At this time these movements were getting more difficult but he could still manage to do it lightly when you would talk to him.  When the event that I am describing happened Grant did not gently shake his head yes and no but with much definition.  It was as if he were talking with/to someone that we could not see.  After a few minutes, everyone was in the room with us and there was complete silence as everyone watched in awe as Grant appeared to be answering to someone.  It was if he was being asked questions and with a very intense look in his eyes was answering with his head movements of yes and no being very pronounced.

After a few minutes, I sat by Grant's left side and started talking to him.  I asked him if he "saw" someone....he looked at me and gently shook his head "no".  I then asked him if someone was "talking" to him.  Again he looked at me intensely and shook his head "yes".  Due to the intense look in his eyes, I asked him if it was scaring him...he again looked at me and gently shook his head "no".  I asked him if it was making him feel good in his heart...he shook his head "yes".  I then asked if the voice was wanting him to do something...."yes"....and my last question to him was, "are you going to do it?"....he looked at me very intent and shook his head "no".  This caused a little chuckle from most of us as we knew of the stubbornness of Grant.  It appeared to most us that what was happening was a sort of "bargaining" session with "the voice".  Occasionally Grant would turn his head to the right of him and with less intensity, again shake his head yes and no, then as if the presence on his left, in the loft area, would regain his attention and he would adamantly shake his head yes and no.

Everyone in the room was on their knees praying, tears flowing and a complete sense of peace and love even though most of us thought that Grant's minutes left with us were going fast.  In the end, we were blessed with 10 more days with him.  No one that was in the room could explain anything but there was a definite presence of a peaceful entity of some sort.  This event lasted for at least 45 minutes to 1 hour.

The part that still baffles me is that his motor skills were so affected and he could only move his head ever so lightly when we would talk to him and he could NOT turn his head totally from side to side without assistance, yet when he was conversing with ? he was able to do it quite well.

I would like to say here that Grant was/had not been on any psychotropic or mind altering medication nor was he taking any type of heavy pain medication... no morphine, demerol, etc.  The only medicine he was taking was 5mg Valium as needed for muscle spasms.  He was always totally coherent and aware and would answer anything you asked him correctly and immediately.  Several people have told me that this event was probably due to dementia or the medicine but I know this is not true.

Other events took place a few days later and I will detail them in a different posting.

Any associated medications or substances with the potential to affect the experience? No      I do not take medication

My son was only taking 5mg valium as needed

Was the kind of experience difficult to express in words?          Uncertain          Hard to put into words that are believable and ones that are not contradicted.  Most people think that Grant was on some sort of drug or hallucinating, but he was neither.  He was fully conscious, aware and alert.

At the time of this experience, was there an associated life threatening event?          Yes    My son was in the last stages of JC virus due to HIV infection

Was the experience dream like in any way?  NO

Did you experience a separation of your consciousness from your body?     No

What emotions did you feel during the experience?          Myself/Peace, awe, sadness

My Son/Can't say for sure but he appeared to be somewhat defiant but okay with it and he appeared to want so bad to be able to talk to us to explain what was happening.  He clearly told me that he was not afraid when I asked him.

Did you hear any unusual sounds or noises?          NO....Complete silence for those of us who were present but when Grant was asked if he heard a voice he shook his head "yes".

Did you observe or hear anything regarding people or events during your experience that could be verified later?         Uncertain     I and many others who were present can verify the event.

Did you notice how your 5 senses were working, and if so, how were they different?     No      Did you have any sense of altered space or time?  No

Did you become aware of future events?      Uncertain     I believe that the "voice" that Grant was hearing was telling him that it was time for him to go.

Have you shared this experience with others?        Yes    Some disbelief thinking that it was hallucinations or dementia or possibly drug induced.

What emotions did you experience following your experience?  Myself/Peace, calmness, sadness but also relief

My Son/Not sure but I believe that he was aware of his limited time

What was the best and worst part of your experience?    The peace in knowing that spiritual beings were around my son and our family

Following the experience, have you had any other events in your life, medications or substances which reproduced any part of the experience?    No

Did the questions asked and information you provided accurately and comprehensively describe your experience?           Uncertain     I think it is easier to detail verbally than in writing.
