John B's Experience
![]()
Experience description:
Three experiences, though I've had more, all of them mild, like these:
An actual out of body experience when I intended to. For the past few years I'd noticed this humming vibration in my body at night. I thought it was my nerves until I started reading about OBE's. I began to observe sometimes apparently staring at the wall yet discovering that my eyes were closed. Upon opening them, I was facing the other direction.
One night I intended to actually leave my body, and go with the fear that tends to occur when the vibrations get really strong. Through practice I've learned how to create the vibrations myself.
I was lying in bed after everyone had gone to sleep and I began to breathe deeply to relax myself, and began letting the vibrations come. I tried to keep my consciousness just above the level of falling asleep. Suddenly it was as if I had a strange hyper awareness; I heard this loud click and a fizzing sound. The sound seemed extraordinarily loud but it did not hurt my ears. One minute I was looking at the ceiling in a house I share and the next was as if my head were floating above someone's room. The sound was very loud, and I was rotating around, as though I couldn't stop myself. There was a bunch of electric-looking light in my peripheral vision as if I were a head in space surrounded by an aura. I was looking into a boy's room from about a foot from the ceiling. There were two bunk beds, and the walls were adorned with boys' sports posters. There were clothes and things on the floor, it was very messy. There was no smell, and no sound except the strange fizzing.
I felt myself falling to the floor and sideways, as if the head I seemed to be were lopsided and could not hold itself up. At this point I was back in my body. I lay in bed wondering what really happened and what this huge sound was, and the click. As I came back to 'normal' I could barely hear the sprinklers on, outside. They were very quiet. But I was able to confirm that what I had heard in my vision at such loud volume was indeed the sprinklers, and the 'click' was the sound they make when they first go on. The room I saw I have never seen before. I felt like I was in someone's child's middle-class bedroom.
Any
associated medications or substances with the potential to affect the
experience? No
Was the kind of experience
difficult to express in words?
No
At the time of this
experience, was there an associated life threatening event?
Uncertain
No but I had lost my former job
and was very afraid of the future.
What was your level of
consciousness and alertness during the experience?
I felt extremely alert; as if I
could see and hear better than ever.
Was the
experience dream like in any way?
Not really. Dreams seem hazy;
this was so clear.
Did you experience a
separation of your consciousness from your body?
Uncertain
It seemed as if it were me,
floating there in the room, wondering where I was; but it seemed distinctly as
if I were not there physically (except maybe my head!)
What emotions did you feel
during the experience?
Amazed; I was surprised that it
was actually happening, and that it was so clear.
Did you hear any unusual
sounds or noises?
I attributed originally a huge
fizzy sound to what seeemed to be an electrical field around me. It later
turned out to be sprinklers near my physical body, but in my normal waking state
these are rather quiet.
Did you meet or see any other
beings? Uncertain
Just the one illuminating this
particular room. I had never been here, before.
Did you experiment while out
of the body or in another, altered state?
Uncertain
I couldn't. I wanted to stop
spinning, and it was as if I were so unfamiliar with being 'out' that I didn't
understand the 'controls'.
Did you notice how your 5
senses were working, and if so, how were they different?
Yes
No smell, no sense of touch.
Did you have any sense of
altered space or time? No
Did you have a sense of
knowing, special knowledge, universal order and/or purpose?
Yes
I knew I was somewhere I
"shouldn't" be.
Were you involved in or aware
of a decision regarding your return to the body?
Uncertain
It seemed that I returned as my
'ethereal me' lost power?
Did you have any changes of
attitudes or beliefs following the experience?
Yes
Just actually believed what I'd
wanted to, because now I had experienced it and it was quite different from what
I expected. I will try to do more.
How has the experience
affected your relationships? Daily life? Religious practices? Career
choices? I realize I
can find knowledge this way that may help other humans. That is my main
purpose.
Has your life changed
specifically as a result of your experience?
Uncertain
I'm more open-minded, and
kinder.
Have you shared this
experience with others?
Yes
Surprisingly, every single
person I shared this with had their own OBE's to tell about. Granted, I told
open-minded people. But more than half my close friends told me things I
thought they never would have.
What emotions did you
experience following your experience?
Amazed and scared, respectful of
how little we know.
What was the best and worst
part of your experience?
Best-- it happened.
