Experience description:

One night, I became aware of my heartbeat, despite being sound asleep. I could plainly feel and hear the gentle 'lub-dub' of my beating heart as this experience continued. The sound of my heart faded once I realized I was not in my body but in high orbit above the Earth, looking down at North America as it would appear at night. I could see the cities by their light islands, along with thin wisps of clouds around storm systems. I was not afraid at all, but more curious than anything else. Once I had taken in enough of the scene, I remember turning around and flying off at an ever-increasing speed. I cannot tell you how fast it was, but it was many, many multiples of light speed. For all my life, I would have 'flying' dreams, in which I would gradually and faster go higher. Ultimately, no matter how I wished, I would inevitably slow down and then wake up, still Earth-bound. But this time, I succeeded in breaking free, eventually ending up over a strange planet, watching huge and undulating herds of unusual animals beneath me, perhaps a thousand feet or so up in the air. Moments later, I was hovering over a city, with lights and buildings of an unknown architecture. Although I could not see beings from that height, I 'knew' full well there were people in that city. It was night time over this planet, too, but it was definitely NOT Terrain in any way. I remember feeling joyful and so happy.

Moments later, when I woke up, I remember being so sad that I was still on Earth. The experience was very lucid, not quite wakefulness, but far MORE than a typical dream
