Experience description:

It was the summer before college.  One night, my friend and I decided to go to a popular lake.  Normally this lake feels very safe, well-lit with music, sidewalks, and many people.  This night, we ended up there too late and we were the only ones there, but we decided to stay and talk.  We were there for half an hour or so.  At one point, my friend decided to check his wallet for something.  I can't remember why he did.  Suddenly, I had a disturbing image come in my mind's eye of a man running toward us from a wooded area with a knife.  The image was from the man's point of view.  I could hear him breathing heavily and could see our shocked faces as he came upon us, my friend still with his wallet open.  The image was over just as quickly as it came.  I grabbed my friend and told him we were leaving immediately.  He was confused, and I told him I would explain later.  We ran to the car and left.  Surprised and shaken by the experience, I tried to explain my reaction, but could barely understand what happened myself.  I was up all night with so many questions.  I still look back on that experience with awe.  Before this, I believed only in what I could experience from my five senses, but this didn't fit that paradigm.
