Experience description:

I was a fairly naive and innocent teenager. In fact, my childhood ambition was to become a missionary. As I got older this urge was replaced with a passion for the arts and I became a keen artist. Despite this experience happening in California in the 60s I had never experimented with drugs and rarely drank. I lived in a small apartment block and had a fairly conventional life. It's fitting then that this experience occurred in the most conventional of settings.. at home, drying my hair whilst listening to music. I was sitting on the floor drying my hair when suddenly I became aware that I had left my physical body... the transition had been seamless and I was still combing my hair. However, becoming conscious of the situation I broke out of this trance and looked down at myself.. it was as if time was frozen.. my physical body was motionless, frozen in time and still combing. It didn't seem as if my soul were bound anywhere in particular and I became agitated. I recalled my father telling me that empty bodies could be possessed by evil spirits and this is why we say gesundheit when we sneeze.. to keep the devils out. I panicked and began shaking my physical body, at some point I found myself back 'in' and awoke. Upon awaking I found scorch mark on my leg and realized I had been electrocuted by my poorly earthed hair dryer.

At the time of your experience was there an associated life-threatening event?   Yes  I was electrocuted by a hair dryer.

Was the experience difficult to express in words?  Yes     The moments of transition in and out of the body.. time, space.. can't explain.

At what time during the experience were you at your highest level of consciousness and alertness?    before i was aware it was taking place.. e.g. when I had left my body but hadn't noticed.

How did your highest level of consciousness and alertness during the experience compare to your normal everyday consciousness and alertness?      Normal consciousness and alertness   I think I interrupted the process and became my normal self.

Did you see or hear any earthly events that were occurring during a time that your consciousness / awareness was apart from your physical / earthly body?   Yes   I saw myself.

What emotions did you feel during the experience?   Bliss and panic.  

Did you pass into or through a tunnel?   No  

Did you see an unearthly light?   No  

Did you seem to encounter a mystical being or presence, or hear an unidentifiable voice?   No

Did you encounter or become aware of any beings who previously lived on earth who are described by name in religions (for example: Jesus, Muhammad, Buddha, etc.)?   No  

Did you encounter or become aware of any deceased (or alive) beings?   Yes   My grandmother was there

Did you become aware of past events in your life during your experience?   No
